The 6000m2 facility is located on the southern edge of the Lister Hospital campus and includes space for pre-operative care, six operating rooms (including two laminar flow theatres), recovery, twenty-six inpatient beds, and an outpatient facility including a dedicated ophthalmology department. High levels of clinical efficiency were a key requirement for the project. Following a review of best practice world-wide, the team determined that dedicated anaesthesiology bays away from the operating rooms would support better staff work flow. Using the latest 3D design software, planners explored these design possibilities in real time in consultation with the client body and this strategy has been incorporated in the overall design. The patient experience and 'consumerism' were also high on the agenda so the internal environment has been developed to optimise the use of daylight, views out and natural ventilation. The building is cooled and ventilated naturally, except where mechanical ventilation is required, as in procedure and treatment rooms. In-patient rooms are predominantly single bed and placed on the perimeter.
