This edge of city site is dramatically located within a sweep of the navigable River Calder and contains a number of fine and significant historic structures. However, as is typical of major regeneration projects, the site also poses considerable challenges – flood risk, highways constraints, site assembly, the sensitivity of the context and a complex public sector funding support requirement. Our client, CTP/St James, in partnership with British Waterways, has worked for a number of years to bring forward a deliverable master plan and, in Spring 2003, appointed FaulknerBrowns to provide a fresh approach and bring their exciting vision into focus. The master plan proposes a new vibrant urban quarter for Wakefield city, accommodating apartments, offices, cafes and leisure uses, and the Barbara Hepworth Galley.
