FaulknerBrowns were one of six international practices invited to participate in the limited design competition to design London's 2012 Olympic Aquatics Facility. We developed a unique and progressive design which whilst iconic and memorable helped to form a gateway building to the Olympic Park. The key driver in the design solution lay in its ability to both embrace the Olympic brief and also to leave a superb legacy after the games for the community and for the future of the sport.
The sinuous curved roof, which was engineered to cover both the diving and competition pools, creates an elegant yet simple series of internal sports spaces and forms a dynamic gateway to the Olympic Park. Informed by principles of people movement, the scheme embraced the Olympic Park entry bridge which helps to create and signpost the entrance to the Aquatics Centre.
