Queen's University Belfast's PEC extension opened in September 2006 to provide a critical mass of high quality sporting facilities. This new facility is central to helping the University in its mission to welcome and inspire more students as well as to encourage participation in a wider range of sports and recreational activities. The hub of the new extension, which provides a fresh new look for the Centre, is a large climbing wall/ bouldering cave which commands the central interior position and scales the two floors of the building. It is also overlooked by a stylish sweeping staircase as it rises slowly through the building under a translucent, self cleaning, tensile roof. The circular form of the extension provides a distinctive new entrance to the PEC as well as taking great advantage of its location in the fine setting of the Botanic Gardens.
