This is a world class facility for cancer research and a landmark project, which has been highly acclaimed. The facility, which acts to attract and retain world class researchers, has a dynamic architectural imagery which responds to the sensitive site context.
We studied the issue of space utilisation within higher education research buildings and recognised the need for quiet cell spaces, but also for the essential interaction between researchers to discuss ideas and thoughts with colleagues. Equally, laboratories require maximum flexibility to ensure that they do not become redundant quickly and can also act as areas for interaction between research teams. The project was awarded the Newcastle upon Tyne Lord Mayor's Design Award and an RIBA Hadrian Award.
