Professional Development Mentoring Lh

FaulknerBrowns has a long history of attracting high calibre staff and supporting their professional development. Most recently this has been demonstrated by the outstanding personal achievements of two of our young architects, Nathalie Baxter and Irina Korneychuk.

In October last year Nathalie was awarded a place in the 2017 RIBAJ Rising Stars cohort, an honour presented to rising architects that are making a difference in architecture and the built environment. Soon after, Irina was named the winner of the AJ/Curtins Inspiring Graduate Prize 2017, an award which recognises an entrepreneurial architecture graduate who has made a significant impact on a practice’s business.

Alongside these high profile achievements, a number of other dynamic and enthusiastic young professionals at our practice are making equally significant impacts in their respective fields. To name just a few, Architects Nick Heyward and Lee McLaughlin were both shortlisted alongside Nathalie to reach the RIBAJ Rising Stars cohort and were both praised highly by the judges in their deliberations. Equally, Architectural Technologist Rosie Johnson has risen to prominence within the northern chapter of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), chairing their young professional development initiative.

We take the development of our staff very seriously and are committed to providing an environment in which they are able to thrive from the outset.

To ensure our new recruits hit the ground running we have developed a network of support which ensures that they ease into practice life as seamlessly as possible. This includes an individually assigned mentor that provides advice and a guiding hand when the inevitable questions arise.

Once settled in to practice life, we believe that the best way to develop the creative and technical capabilities of our designers is to expose them to challenging projects at an early stage, providing first-hand experience of the realities of working within a multi-disciplinary team to meet the diverse needs of a client.

We also believe that it is important to support the development of their wider understanding of the professional obligations of an architectural practice in providing a high quality and sustainable service to our clients. This stands our young architects in good stead when they come to prepare for their RIBA Architecture Part III exams and CIAT Chartership.

Our people are encouraged to actively engage with their professions. We support their involvement in regional and national industry bodies and professional networks, such as Generation 4 Change (G4C), the young professional voice of Constructing Excellence; the Young Architectural Practitioners Forum (YAPF), the RIBA network for newly qualified architects; and aspirATion, the CIAT network for newly qualified and future Architectural Technology professionals.

For those with the potential to progress into a leadership role within the practice we have built an academic partnership with Newcastle Business School at Northumbria University, offering a Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership Development. The course has been designed to provide the skills and motivation to succeed in a globally competitive marketplace.

Where staff wish to pursue further studies in areas of specialist interest, we provide financial assistance with course fees and time away from the studio to complete their studies. This is something which ultimately benefits the body of expertise our studio teams can draw upon.

Above all of this, we encourage each and every individual to take a proactive role in both their own development and the success of the practice. This has created a studio culture which supports initiative and creative thinking, which in turn raises standards and fosters innovation in the workplace.

The past year has seen many successes for our practice at an individual and collective level. This is testament to the talents of our team, to which we owe a great deal of thanks. As we continue to support their development, we look forward with great anticipation to seeing what we can achieve together in the years ahead.
